Big Joy, The Adventures of James Broughton is the new documentary directed by Eric Slade, Stephen Silha, co-directed by Dawn Logsdon. We asked Eric a few questions about his hometown of Portland:

What was it like growing up in Portland?

Portland was a pretty sleepy little town when I was growing up. I loved downtown in those days, because it was kinda deserted and had lots of junk stores with piles of old stuff you could get really cheap. Hardly anyone ever left or moved here. It’s all changed since then. These days it’s hard to find anyone who’s from here.

Who in Portland inspired you to pursue your dreams?

I had a high school English teacher, Peter Lackaff, who really encouraged radical self expression. He encouraged my writing and creative risk taking, and he treated me like a real human being. The next year he was gone – I think he was too wild for high school.

How does it feel to bring Big Joy back home?

So many friends saw me working on this film for so many years – which just looked like lots of agonizing, traveling, and missing parties – that it’s great to be able to show off what we made, and display what all of that creative angst gave birth to.

Whats the biggest thing in Portland?

Bike paths.
Or:
The Combined Sewer Overflow Project.

What’s the most joyous thing about Portland?

Portland has never taken itself too seriously. We’re not trying to prove anything. We don’t think we’re New York or LA, we’re just Portland, and that allows us to be as offbeat as we want without worrying if it’s too odd or uncool. It makes for a lot of joy. ~ Eric Slade
