The film has “followed its own weird” to Austin, Texas for a March premiere at the South By Southwest Film Festival.
BIG JOY: The Adventures of James Broughton is one of eight documentaries in competition at the festival. Needless to say, we are exuberant at the opportunity to present at this cutting edge festival.
For those not familiar, SXSW is, by their own words,
The South by Southwest Festival offers the unique convergence of original music, independent films, and emerging technologies. Fostering creative and professional growth alike, SXSW is the premier destination for discovery.
Year after year, the event is a launching pad for new creative content. New media presentations, music showcases and film screenings provide buzz-generating exposure for creators and compelling entertainment for audiences.
A pioneering festival like that seems like an ideal launchpad for a pioneering documentary about a pioneer like James Broughton.
Speaking of, we want you to join us in being pioneers! Since 2013 would be Broughton’s 100th birthday, and his work is so relevant to the 21st Century, the Big Joy team is inviting everyone to celebrate by holding poetry readings, salons, dances, and creative expressions of all sorts. We have a lot of fun resources to offer you in order to make your Big Joy Salon a wondrous experience. E-mail us at salons@bigjoy.org and let us know your dreams to celebrate Big Joy so we can make them a reality together.
Said the one-armed logger from Portland,

as you chip away the days
you think it is all monotony.
Then at the severance payoff
you realize it has all been magic.
