“Broughton encouraged people to ‘follow their weird’ and his story tracks remarkably the hotbeds of human expression through half of the twentieth century. From Broughton’s first discovery of his voice in a post-WWII society exploding with creativity to his revelation of the importance of true love and sexual freedom late in life, Big Joy is a film that not only makes the case of its subject’s talent but, even more importantly, is itself an expression of joy that James Broughton would love.” — Film Threat

There are many wonderful films screening at Frameline37 in addition to Big Joy. We highly recommend checking out Lewd & Lascivious (formerly titled The Last Dance Raid), which is playing right before Big Joy at 1:30pm on Saturday, June 22nd. This documentary tells the unlikely true story of straight ministers rallying with the queer community to abolish police brutality in 1960’s San Francisco. Why not see both films?
Then, after the screenings, meet the people behind both “Big Joy” and “Lewd & Lacivious” at a special joint filmmaker reception at Cafe Flore on Market & Noe from 6-8pm, on Saturday, June 22nd, followed by an afterparty hosted by the pop-up Faetopia community space next door from 8-10pm. Join our Big Joy San Francisco Facebook group to stay in touch will all of our Bay Area organizing efforts.
