Special Thanks to New York’s (Dis)Order of Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, as well as MIX NYC ambassadors, performance artist Jason Jenn, David Sterensky and Mat dos Santos of Friends With Benefits Records, Experimental Film scholars Robert Haller of Anthology, and Jon Gartenberg of Tribeca Film Festival.

(Update: 3/24/2014) At three “cabaret” screenings of BIG JOY: The Adventures of James Broughton at New York City’s Anthology Film Archives, audiences were treated to songs, poems, dance tracks, heartfelt talks, performances, and award ceremonies.

Members of New York’s (Dis)Order of Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, as well as MIX NYC ambassadors, introduced all three screenings in March, and performance artist Jason Jenn gave rollicking interpretations of Broughton poetry, accompanied by images from his films, following each screening. Experimental Film scholars Robert Haller of Anthology, and Jon Gartenberg of Tribeca Film Festival also spoke.

And, David Sterensky and Mat dos Santos of Friends With Benefits Records played dance tracks from the new EP JAMES BROUGHTON: The Music of His Dance (Vol. 1) which they put together after sending Broughton poetry tapes to DJs around the world. The EP, with five tracks, was released the same week as the screenings with parties in New York and San Francisco.

The Sisters unveiled a new award – the Flying Phallus Award for Promulgation of Universal Joy – which they presented to co-director Stephen Silha and activist Bizzy Barefoot in a moving ceremony before the first screening. Broughton was part of the San Francisco Sisters, an order created in the 1970s to fight AIDS and promote gay rights. In performances and actions with them, he was Sister Sermonetta of the Flying Phallus.

The screenings, followed by screenings in New Orleans, Detroit, and Philadelphia, was part of a limited theatrical rollout for the film, leading up to the full release this summer.

(Update: 3/21/2014) Tonight in New York – the NYC Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence gave out the Flying Phallus Award for Excellence in Promulgating Universal Joy at the Big Joy Anthology Film Archives screening!
